SMA vs. ETF: What's the Difference?
Separately managed accounts (SMAs) and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can both provide access to a professionally managed investment strategy — but they do it in different ways. Here are five key attributes to help investors understand which vehicle may best suit their needs.
-
Ownership
Investors own shares of a fund which owns the underlying investments.
-
Customization
Typically "one-size-fits-all" — all shareholders own shares of the same portfolio.
-
Trading & Liquidity
ETFs trade on an exchange throughout the day at market prices, offering intraday liquidity.
-
Tax Treatment
Often tax-efficient by design. Due to their in-kind creation and redemption process, ETFs tend to distribute fewer capital gains, allowing investors to defer taxes until they sell their shares.
-
Costs & Minimums
Costs are typically reflected in the ETF's expense ratio (plus any brokerage trading costs). Generally, ETFs have no formal minimum beyond the cost of one share.
-
Ownership
Investors directly own the individual stocks and/or bonds in their account.
-
Customization
Often more flexible — investors may customize holdings to exclude certain stocks or align with personal preferences.
-
Trading & Liquidity
Investments within SMAs can generally be sold during regular trading hours, with the manager selecting which shares to trade in your account. Settlement of trades and liquidation of a portfolio is not instantaneous.
-
Tax Treatment
Because the investor owns the securities outright, regular trading by the manager (buying and selling of stocks) inside the account can create taxable gains that flow to the investor. SMAs can allow for tax-aware management because the manager can actively harvest losses to potentially offset gains.
-
Costs & Minimums
SMAs generally have an advisory/management fee (often tiered) and trading costs. Minimum investments are often higher.
It's all about fit. A financial advisor can help you decide which investment vehicle is the best fit for your accounts.
Important: This information is for general informational and educational purposes only and should not be considered personalized investment, tax, or legal advice. Investing involves risks, including possible loss of principal. Consider investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses carefully before investing. ETF shares are bought and sold at market price, which may be above or below their net asset value (NAV).
Investment Strategy
Global Dividend Strategy
Global value investing for dividend income can be a significant component of an equity allocation and long-term wealth creation. Applying a differentiated dividend framework to global investing and deep, macroeconomic analysis of business cycle dynamics, quantitative stock ranking, and traditional company fundamental analysis, CresAlta's global dividend strategy rotates from dividend value to dividend payer with dividend growth stocks as a ballast to the strategy.
Investment Strategy
Small & Mid Cap Strategy
Extensive research and a disciplined, value-oriented dividend framework are used to identify companies whose market capitalizations are within the range of those in the Russell 2500 Index (commonly referred to as "SMID" companies). CresAlta seeks to identify companies that have low valuations, strong balance sheets, improving fundamentals, a disciplined capital allocation strategy that generates growing total shareholder returns (dividends plus share buybacks), and managements with a track record of creating shareholder wealth. Built for investors seeking differentiated alpha in the less-efficient small and mid-cap market segment.
Separately Managed Accounts
Strategies Offered Only as SMAs
The following strategies are available exclusively as Separately Managed Accounts, offering direct security ownership, tax flexibility, and personalized portfolio management.

Natural Resources Strategy
Energy and food security, AI infrastructure build out, electrification, defense spending, and global resource competition are driving renewed demand for the natural resources essential to economic growth, while years of underinvestment have left supply constrained. Applying a global perspective to geopolitical shifts and long-duration investment themes, CresAlta's Natural Resources strategy seeks to identify financially durable companies positioned to benefit from evolving global supply-demand dynamics. Through rigorous fundamental company analysis, balance sheet discipline, and a total-yield framework that evaluates dividends and share repurchases across commodity cycles, the strategy is designed to provide differentiated equity exposure to the real assets increasingly critical to the global economy.

Sustainable Global Dividend Strategy
Global dividend investing can be a meaningful component of an equity allocation and long-term wealth creation, particularly when focused on businesses positioned to create enduring value. CresAlta's Sustainable Global Dividend strategy applies a differentiated value-oriented dividend framework, business cycle insight, and rigorous fundamental analysis alongside sustainability-informed research. Companies that are focused on the production of hydrocarbons, provide goods and services that may be harmful to society (e.g., tobacco), and defense stocks are excluded from the portfolio. By seeking financially strong companies with durable cash generation, disciplined capital allocation, and resilient competitive positioning, the strategy is designed to provide globally diversified dividend income and long-term capital appreciation.
Sustainable Global Dividend SMA
An SMA does not have a prospectus, is not a registered product, and does not afford the oversight that a 1940 Act product does. CVGD and CVSM are 1940 Act funds and distributed by Paralel Distributors LLC (Paralel). SMAs and related investment advisory services are provided by CresAlta Investment Management, Inc., a federally registered investment adviser. Paralel is not affiliated with CresAlta Investment Management, Inc. and does not distribute SMAs.
